BREAKING: Ganduje stops paying 30,000 as minimum wage, reverts to old scale

Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano state has stopped the payment of N30,000 minimum wage to the state workers, reverting the previous wage scale of 18,000 naira.

Recalled that in April last year, President Muhammad Buhari has signed the new minimum wage act into law, following the pressure of the organized labour which stipulates N30,000 as the minimum wage.

Kano government has in December 2019 agreed with its workers to start the payment of the new minimum wage after many Nigerian States implemented the new salary scale though there are some state that are yet to start.

In his interview with journalists, spokesperson to governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, Salihu Tanko-Yakasai, said following the recession caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the state is unable to continue paying N30,000 as minimum wage.

“The state government has reverted to the initial minimum pay due to the recession. What we are getting now as a government has reduced, and we can’t afford to pay the N30,000 minimum wage,” he said.

The state civil service have been complaining that the government have been reducing their salary without informing them.
